FORUM 10

This week, we looked at Photography, including its history, vocabulary, and best practices. We live in an image-saturated world where many of these ideas are so everyday that we rarely stop to think about them. However, taking the time to stop and think about why a particular image "works" well – or doesn't – is a useful exercise.

For Discussion Forum 10, find one example of an image that does NOT "work" and describe why. Is the image poorly framed? Is it poorly lit or is the color off? Does the composition of the image ignore the rule of thirds? Is there a problem with the content or the context of the image?

As an example, consider the image below. This image has a context problem. Rosa Parks is certainly a historical figure worthy of remembrance. But if you know the history of her life, you can understand why putting her picture on the back of a bus is in extremely poor taste. It is obvious that the person who made the decision to place this image failed to consider the importance of image context.

To receive full credit craft your own post and then make a meaningful comment on at least two (2) of your classmates' posts. A meaningful comment is defined as 2-3 sentences that demonstrate clearly you have 1) read their original post in its entirety, and 2) you are responding to their thoughts and ideas in a clear and respectful way.

PHOTO PITCH

In this assignment you will pitch your idea for the Photo Essay that we will be working on over the next two weeks. Your photo essay will ultimately consist of eight (8) to twelve (12) individual photos centered around the specific theme of your project. One important consideration is that you MUST get express, written permission from any persons photographed in your Photo Essay. Unlike your private personal life, in the professional world you need to obtain binding image release forms for photos of human subjects. Keep that in mind when considering your project topic. Your pitch should include:

One sentence at the top of your post that states clearly the theme for your photo essay
A one (1) paragraph description that offers more detail such as:
The content of each of the photos you plan to take
The location(s) you will need to shoot in
Any other considerations such as the time of day you will need to shoot, permission you might need to use the location, specialized equipment, etc.

NOTE: Your topic must be appropriate for a classroom setting. If you are unsure whether or not your topic is appropriate you can email me before the assignment is due or wait and receive my feedback on your submission. If I determine that your topic as pitched is not appropriate I reserve the right to ask you to amend or change your topic and resubmit your pitch.
